5 tips to remove bird poop safely

If you park in Macquarie Street in Dubbo, you'll know what we're talking about... If you park under the trees at dusk, you're in for a nasty surprise. In under five minutes, starlings can turn your car into a sewage works!

The smell and the amount of droppings that can come from  one tree is incredible, worst of all the bird droppings can do serious damage to your car. Bird droppings are highly acidic and will damage the finish on your car.

Unlike mammals, birds have no bladder because they do not store liquid wastes. Birds pass their urine into a common chamber used for digestive and urinary wastes. This chamber, called the cloaca, also contains reproductive by-products. So, when a bird lets go with a "bomb" it contains white uric acid crystals and a bunch of digestive wastes like insect parts and seeds.

So if you are in Macquarie Street in Dubbo and see a car park under a tree at dusk, think twice!

5 Top tips for removing bird poo from your car:

It is important that you remove a bird dropping off your car's finish as fast as you can before it can cause any damage. Bird dropping contain uric acid and uric acid is corrosive enough to eat past a coating of wax or paint sealant and then begin to etch your car's paint.

Step 1:
First off, if the bird poo has dried out, you need to get it liquid again.
Make sure you flood the area with warm soapy water, applying a generous amount

Step 2:
Leave it to sit for about 45 seconds

Step 3:
Fold a microfibre cloth in 4 ways and try to lift the poop off, DO NOT WIPE OR SCRUB. This is because most birds will eat small stones to help grind up their food. These stones do not get digested, becoming a part of the poop on your car, so a wiping motion can create scratching. Each time you pull the cloth off, you will see the poop remnants in the cloth - don't wipe this back into the paint.

Step 4:
Keep re-applying warm soapy water if the poop mark persists on top of the paint, or f the paint has no liquid on it.

Step 5:
Once the residue is all gone, spray the area with a mist of clean soapy water and wipe it dry with a clean section of a microfibre cloth. Remember to not wipe the areas you have not sprayed, as there is a chance of creating scratches as you rub dirt or grime into the paint.

Who doesn't love a free meal?

We all do right? Pigeons, Starlings and Sparrows are no different... If they can get a free meal they will!

Much the same as humans, Pigeons, Starlings and Sparrows are creatures of habit . Once a constant food source is established, they will continue to return. Alfresco dining has helped birds establish into the urban area in plague proportions... Good food equals plenty of business .

By not throwing scraps to the birds, you will help keep them in their natural environment and help ensure your dining experience is enjoyable. So when you see a sign saying "Please don't feed the birds", please. do. not. feed. the. birds!  It will be much more sustainable and economical in the long term.

There is nothing better... A kookaburra laughing in the morning or seeing the beautiful colours of parrots in your garden trees. The natural sounds and sights of Australia.

But for how long?

Pigeons and several other problem bird species  in large numbers will push these native birds out of their natural habitats . These particular type of pest birds are highly territorial and once a food source or "harbourage" are established, they will put pressure our native birds to leave. So keep an eye out for your natives and if pigeons become a problem, give our professional team at Birworx a call on 0428 639 945 .

Problem bird species and the damage they cause includes:
  • Common starling:  causes damage to fruit (particularly grapes and cherries), vegetable and cereal crops. Implicated in carrying and transmitting diseases to man and other animals. Competes with native species for nest hollows.
  • Common myna:  causes damage to fruit and grain crops. Commensal roosting and nesting habits creates aesthetic and human health concerns. Competes with native species for nest hollows.
  • Sulphur-crested cockatoo / little corella:  damages ripening sunflower crops, fruit and nut crops.
  • Galah:  causes damage to germinating cereal crops.
  • Sparrow:  causes damage to fruit vegetable, grain and oilseed crops; competes with native species for nest hollows.
  • Pigeon:  roosting sites cause fouling damage (from build-up of faeces) in urban areas. Implicated in carrying and transmitting diseases to man and other animals.
  • Crows and ravens (corvids):  consume fruits and grains. May prey upon sick, dying or mismothered lambs and can injure sheep.
3 Tips for keeping these birds under control:
  1. Install bird repellents on ledges.
  2. Block off nesting areas using nets, traps and other structural modifications.
  3. Regularly inspect your roof for any openings and nesting sites, especially under and around HVAC units.

The growing infestation of birds in public places and homes, improvement in technology and more stringent legislations has resulted in higher demand for bird control services globally.

Regionally, the market for bird control services has increased due to the growing infestation of birds in public places, particularly commercial buildings, offices and industries. Stricter laws and regulations to maintain hygiene and safety from birds has contributed to the growing demand for these services as well.

With the expanding population in our regional centres, birds have adapted to live in or around buildings occupied by humans, they survive and in some cases, thrive by scavenging for food, water, materials and shelter provided by the human habitat.

Starlings and Pigeons have had a real effect on Dubbo's main street. The smell and mess of thousands of starlings roosting in the main street is now a serious issue.

Try as they have, Dubbo Regional Council have only had temporary solutions and minimal success in the control of the issue.

The problem has caused an enormous amount of frustration to both businesses and council.

To date, Macquarie Street in the CBD area is pressure cleaned everyday to prepare for the day ahead for business and people, HOWEVER, you will hear everyday... WHAT IS THAT SMELL?

Currently, 1 tree that was a major concern for council, remains free of Starlings every night. On a daily basis, of an evening, hundreds of noisy destructive Starlings descend into this tree for weeks on end, but no more.

Why? What has changed? What happened you ask?

Dubbo local business Birdworx, along with Dubbo Regional Council have conducted a trial of "Birdaway", a 100% natural and pesticide free product with unbelievable results.

These messy, destructive and very costly birds now no longer land in the tree.

Council are extremely pleased and encouraged by the result and are looking to greatly extend the trial.

It simply "Worx", a sustainable, big picture solution to a major problem council's all over the country are confronted with.

Pigeons can create extensive damage and spread harmful diseases due to the monumental amount of faecal matter produced. This story from one of our clients explains just how damaging untreated pigeon problems can be.

Our client called us to their property to inspect one of their infested sites, they were absolutely fed up with the damage pigeons were causing to their business. Pigeons were nesting in their silo and causing major problems, quite frankly, they were sick of it.

The cost of these pigeons and their mess had now become a serious issue, these issues included:

  • Contaminated grain resulting in their customers refusing loads
  • Extensive and very costly clean ups to the site were required before any grain could be shipped
  • Considerable WHS issues resulting in staff refusing and not being able to work in the mess until it was cleaned up
  • Damage to their equipment, infrastructure and assets

The solution:

  • BirdWorx began a pigeon eradication program to remove the vast quantity of pigeons by bird-proofing the area and preventing any chance of reinfestation of the area.

The results:

  • An enormous saving in time, money and stress for maintenance and clean-up costs to their site
  • No more contaminated grain shipments
  • No more WHS issues with site and a much better bottom line for their business
